NATURAL GAS WELL DRILLING
Self-Sufficiency at its Best!
With the increasing cost of energy and its questionable
availability, the idea of self-sufficiency is more appealing than
ever. Under Eastern Kansas and parts of Western Missouri there exists
an abundance of natural gas reserves that a home owner may tap into.
A natural gas well can be a vital part of the realization of self-sufficiency.
A natural gas well is like a water well in a few
ways. It is an engineered, drilled hole that is cased and perforated.
However, these are the only similarities. Natural gas wells are
usually constructed at greater depths, steel casing is used instead
of PVC plastic, and full length grouting of the casing is required.
At completion, gauges, regulators, and odorizers are part of the
natural gas well construction.
Each state has its own regulations regarding natural
gas well construction and permitting. There are required set-back
distances for placement of the well from property lines. Kansas
requires a set-back of 265' and Missouri requires 165'. There may
be variances given to these set-backs on a case-by-case basis. In
Kansas, an Intent to Drill is required and there is a five day wait
after approval. In addition, an Operators License is required. In
Missouri, a bond must be posted and an application to drill is required.
We are happy to assist you with the paperwork as needed.
One thing to remember is that most natural gas
wells in this area also produce water that must be pumped off on
a daily basis. Water, like natural gas, follows the path of the
least resistance and about 80% of the gas formations make both water
and natural gas. This water is normally mineralized and should not
be dumped into a waterway. Each state has its own regulations for
dealing with mineralized water. A natural gas well can give you
heat for a home, greenhouse, barn and shop - or dry your clothes,
make your hot water, generate electricity and even cool your home.
